Mare Liberum Boatbuilding Workshop!June 26th, 27th and 28th.
$90 for three days
at The Gowanus Studio Space
Mare Liberum and the Gowanus Studio Space are proud to offer a weekend of boat-building and inner-city cruising!
Led by artists Dylan Gauthier, Stephan von Muehlen, and Benjamin Cohen, The Free Seas / Mare Liberum is a freeform publishing, boatbuilding and waterfront art collective, based in Gowanus, Brooklyn. Finding its roots in centuries-old stories of urban water squatters and haphazard water craft builders, Mare Liberum is a collaborative exploration of what it takes to make viable aquatic craft as an alternative to life on land.
We are currently building a fleet of Liberum Dories, a design based on the historic 15' Banks Dory. The frame of this boat can be constructed over the course of a single afternoon using minimal tools and basic building skills (seriously, you can do it).
The ScheduleFriday June 26th, 6:00 pm:
* Mare Liberum Slideshow
* Meet and Greet
Come to the Gowanus Studio Space for a quick tour of the history of the Mare Liberum project, meet your fellow workshoppers and take a late night cruise on the Gowanus Canal.
Saturday June 27th, 12:00pm to 6:00pm: Boat Building!
* Understand the plans
* Cut out and assemble boat parts
* Seal the boats and make them water tight
* Paint them!
"Julia Child Style", we'll have a few boats at different stages of completion to work on, and we'll be creating one from scratch. Attendees will learn how to trace our templates (and take some home) create all the necessary pieces for building a boat and assemble a complete liberum dory. We'll also be sealing up an existing dory and adding finishing touches (paint, seats, floors, etc...) to one of the existing fleet.
Sunday June 28th 10:30 am:
* Finshing Touches
* More Rowing!
We'll add any finishing touches and get our boats down to the canal for some boating! We'll also be raffling off one of the Liberum dory's for a lucky participant to take home! hopefully it will fit in your apartment.
