GOWANUS STUDIO SPACE
COMMUNITY CODE OF CONDUCT

Being a member of The Gowanus Studio Space is an invitation to join a community of creatives, artists, and makers. Your entry into The Gowanus Studio Space is a promise to respect and protect it. We believe in respecting each other’s art and humanity.

We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment or discrimination in all interactions, whether in-person or virtual, including:

  • Our physical studio space.

  • Online platforms and communication channels.

  • Studio-sponsored events and gatherings.

All officers, members, participants, and guests are expected to uphold these standards.

Common + Shared Space

Our shared space (common areas and shops) is limited and intended to be used by all members. We encourage equitable and thoughtful use that allows every member opportunities to create.

  • Projects must be temporary, ideally not going beyond two weeks.

  • All projects should be clearly labeled with member contact info, project needs, and timeline.

  • Return common/shared tools and materials immediately after use.

  • Limit individual project footprint as much as possible to ensure collective access to space.

  • Remove completed work and clean up promptly to make space for others.

  • Do not store personal items in common areas including hallways and shops.

  • Report any broken or missing tool immediately to appropriate shop head.

  • Timely fee payment is a fundamental part of our community's code of conduct. Members who cannot meet this obligation must proactively discuss alternative arrangements with the treasurer.

Community Respect + Conflict Resolution

We value expression and community. Clear and respectful communication helps maintain a safe and inclusive creative space. Every member and guest is responsible for upholding this as a safe space.

  • Address conflicts early through direct, respectful dialogue.

  • Listen actively and speak thoughtfully, especially during disagreements.

  • State boundaries clearly when needed.

  • Stop immediately if someone expresses discomfort.

  • Report any safety concerns immediately to a GSS officer.

Prohibited Behaviors

Our community space requires mutual respect. These behaviors compromise our shared environment and are prohibited:

  • Any form of discriminatory, harassing, offensive, disrespectful, or retaliatory conduct.

  • Actions that make others feel unwelcome or unsafe in the space including unwanted physical contact or attention.

  • Violence or threats of violence including destruction of personal property or studio property.

  • Behavior that creates a hostile environment, which may be defined as an atmosphere in which there is behavior, speech, or treatment of individuals that undermines their dignity.

This code of conduct reflects our values as a creative community, though it is neither exhaustive, nor complete. We trust our members to uphold these principles with the same care and attention they bring to their craft.

If you experience behavior that compromises our space and community, please notify a GSS officer or board member. We will respond promptly, and serious violations may result in immediate membership termination.

Leadership Response Process

In the case of a violation or complaint, officers and board members will:

  • Review written accounts from involved parties.

  • Meet with affected members.

  • Make decisions based on all available information.

  • Communicate outcomes clearly.

  • Decide on and take appropriate action, from mediation to written warnings to permanent membership termination.

Together we all lead by example. It is our collective responsibility to maintain an environment where we can all safely create and flourish.
